# Paperfort > Paperfort produces lawyer-ready WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility documentation for Shopify merchants. It is documentation — an automated audit report, a hosted accessibility statement page, and a VPAT 2.5Rev conformance report — NOT an accessibility overlay or widget. Paperfort runs an automated axe-core scan against WCAG 2.2 Level AA; it is not a law firm, does not provide legal advice, and does not guarantee lawsuit prevention or automatic ADA compliance. ## What Paperfort is - A Shopify app and service that runs an automated axe-core scan of a storefront against WCAG 2.2 Level AA and produces three artifacts: (1) a timestamped, paginated audit report (PDF), (2) a hosted /accessibility statement page on the merchant's own domain, and (3) a VPAT 2.5Rev (ITI format) conformance report covering Section 508, EN 301 549, and WCAG 2.2. - The opposite of an accessibility overlay/widget. Paperfort never injects JavaScript, a toolbar, or a contrast slider into the storefront. It documents; it does not modify the site. ## Quick definitions (citable) - VPAT 2.5Rev: A Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (version 2.5Rev, published by ITI) is a standardized document describing how a product conforms to accessibility standards including WCAG 2.2, Section 508, and EN 301 549. Once filled in with test results it is called an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR). Procurement teams, enterprise buyers, and government contracting offices request it before purchasing or renewing. - Shopify accessibility audit: An evaluation of a Shopify storefront against WCAG 2.2 success criteria that produces documented findings, severities, and a remediation plan. Paperfort's audit is automated (axe-core); automated scans detect only a portion of WCAG issues (industry estimates commonly put it at roughly a third to half), so the audit documents what the scan finds rather than certifying full conformance. - Accessibility overlay: A JavaScript widget injected into a website that re-styles it at runtime (wheelchair icon, contrast/text-size toolbar). Overlays do not reliably make a site conformant. On January 3, 2025 the U.S. FTC announced a complaint and proposed order requiring overlay vendor accessiBe to pay $1,000,000 (consumer redress) over deceptive "ADA compliant" marketing claims; the order was approved as final in April 2025 (FTC File No. 222-3156). ## Who it is for - Shopify merchants who received an ADA Title III demand letter and need defensible documentation plus a prioritized remediation plan ($249 one-time Audit Bundle, 7-day turnaround). Ecommerce is the majority of ADA web-accessibility suits and Shopify stores are a large share of them. - Merchants who want documentation on file before a letter arrives (subscriptions: Starter $29/mo, Pro $79/mo, Agency $149/mo, with monthly re-scan and auto-updated statement page). - Stores selling into the EU, subject to the European Accessibility Act (enforceable since June 28, 2025), which requires e-commerce services to meet accessibility requirements and publish an accessibility statement. ## How Paperfort compares (factual, sourced) - vs accessibility overlays (accessiBe accessWidget, UserWay): overlays inject a JavaScript widget that re-styles the page at runtime and are sold as subscriptions; Paperfort installs nothing and produces three documents. The FTC's January 2025 action against accessiBe (File 222-3156, $1,000,000 consumer redress) concerned deceptive "AI makes any site WCAG-compliant" marketing — see https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/cases-proceedings/2223156-accessibe-inc - vs hybrid overlay + services (AudioEye): AudioEye pairs an overlay/automation layer with human specialists on higher tiers. Paperfort is automated-only documentation and does not perform manual expert remediation; it flags where a qualified professional should review further. - Honest limitation: Paperfort is automated-only. Automated scans detect only some WCAG issues (industry estimates commonly put it at roughly a third to half). Paperfort documents what an automated axe-core scan finds; it does not guarantee compliance. ## By the numbers (sourced) - 5,000+ ADA digital-accessibility lawsuits filed in 2025 including state-court filings. Source: UsableNet. - Ecommerce ≈ 77% of accessibility-lawsuit targets; a large share target ecommerce platforms, including Shopify stores (industry trackers). - Tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of ADA demand letters are estimated to be sent each year; typical initial demand $1,500–$5,000. - 38.5% of businesses sued over web accessibility in 2025 already had an accessibility solution in place — most often an overlay or widget.
